Invisible in the ear hearing aids are the most commonly requested devices. So why doesn’t everyone have them?
Well, there’s a number of reasons.
1. Canal size: Depending on the size of your ear canal, it’s sometimes not possible to squeeze all the device components into a small space. It’s important for you to consultant your clinician to discuss this option.
2. Degree of hearing loss: Those with mild hearing loss may choose an invisible hearing aid but if you have a more severe degree of hearing loss, a different style of device may provide better results.
3. Wax, moisture and ongoing maintenance: Any time we have something in our ear, it is exposed to wax, skin, dust, moisture and oil. In patients that have ear health concerns such as wet ears or excess wax, an invisible device may be prone to breakdowns more frequently than a different style of hearing aid. It may also mean that more preventative maintenance is required.
4. The occlusion effect: Any time we stick something in our ears, it changes the way we hear our own voice. Some patients will report a blocked feeling, an echo or “Drummy” sound quality. There is also the chance that an invisible hearing aid can increase the sounds of chewing.
5. Dexterity: Invisible hearing aids are super small and even skilled hands can often have trouble inserting and removing the devices, not to mention changing the batteries and cleaning them. Unfortunately as we get older, we can often start to lose feeling in our fingers, causing our dexterity to decline. Anyone with poor dexterity would not be recommended and invisible hearing aid.
At the time of writing, small devices also sacrifice the rechargeable option – meaning the batteries need to be changed every 2-3 days.
6. Connectivity: In order to squeeze all that technology into a tiny space, something has to give. Invisible devices will not have Bluetooth connectivity (think smart phone streaming).
